Germany: Speyer & Speyer Cathedral

Speyer is a town in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, with approximately 50,000 inhabitants. Founded by the Romans, it is one of Germany's oldest cities. Located beside the river Rhine, Speyer is 25 km south of Ludwigshafen and Mannheim.

Speyer is dominated by the Speyer Cathedral. Laid out in the form of a Latin cross, it is one of Germany's largest and most important Romanesque buildings, and was intended to be no less than the largest church in the western world when building work began in 1030. In 1981, the cathedral was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List of culturally important sites as "a major monument of Romanesque art in the German Empire".
