Germany: 1300 years of the Monastic Island of Reichenau

In 2024, the Reichenau Monastery Island on Lake Constance marks 1300 years since its founding back in 724 by the monk Pirmin. This UNESCO World Heritage site has a rich legacy as a medieval center of learning, spirituality, and art. The Benedictine monks of Reichenau were renowned for their exquisite illuminated manuscripts and contributions to theology, science, and medicine. Today, visitors can explore three well-preserved Romanesque churches on the island, each showcasing remarkable frescoes and architectural details that illustrate Reichenau’s unique role in European monastic and cultural history. On this occasion the commemorative cover below was issued on the 1st of March 2024 by Deutsche Post. I'm happy to receive it mailed from the Reichenau Island Post Office.

The fifth-largest town in the State of Baden-Württemberg after Stuttgart, Karlsruhe, Mannheim and Freiburg im Breisgau, Heidelberg is part of the densely populated Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region. The current bridge, made of Neckar Valley Sandstone and the ninth built on the site, was constructed in 1788 by Elector Charles Theodore, and is one of the best-known landmarks and tourist destinations in Heidelberg.

Germany: Basilica Birnau

This is my 100th post on this blog and for this I choosed a special card. It's a special card for me, because at this place I asked my girlfriend to marry me. We both wrote the card and posted it from there. It shows the Cloister Church Birnau at the Lake Constance, near Ueberlingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The Basilica of Birnau is a real landmark on Lake Constance’s west banks, a popular pilgrimage church and a jewel of the Baroque era. It was (re-)built between 1746 and 1749.
