Portugal: Ethnobotany

Ethnobotany is the study of the cultural interactions between plants and humans, a relationship which began at the dawn of our history and took on progressively more sophisticated forms as human societies evolved into civilisations. It was agriculture that made this evolution possible, providing the steady supply of food that was indispensable for stability and social cohesion.

Portugal: Winner of the UEFA European Football Championship 2016 - "Registered Cover"

This year the 2024 UEFA European Football Championships will take place in my homeland Germany. Back in 2016 Portugal won the tournament for the first time, following a 1–0 victory after extra time over the host team, France, in the final played at the Stade de France. This victory was commemorated on this nice minisheet which can be seen below on a great registered Cover from Portugal.

Portugal: Cascais - 2018 European Youth Capital

The European Youth Capital (abbreviated EYC) is the title awarded to a European city for the period of one year, during which it is given the chance to showcase, through a multi-faceted programme, its youth-related cultural, social, political and economic life and development. The European Youth Capital is an initiative by the European Youth Forum, and the first capital was chosen in 2009. The current, capital for the 2018 calendar year is Cascais. It is a coastal town and a municipality in Portugal, 30 kilometres (19 miles) west of Lisbon. On this nice minisheet used on this letter from Portugal, you can see Saint Martha's Lighthouse and the House of Saint Mary (Casa de Santa Maria) in Cascais.

Portugal: Madeira

This nice card shows Funchal, the capital of Madeira at New Year's Eve. Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago located in the north Atlantic Ocean, west and slightly south of Portugal. Its total population was estimated in 2011 at 267.785. It is just under 400 kilometres (250 mi) north of Tenerife, Canary Islands. Since 1976, the archipelago has been one of the two Autonomous regions of Portugal (the other being the Azores, located to the northwest). It includes the islands of Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Desertas, administered together with the separate archipelago of the Savage Islands. It is an outermost region of the European Union.

I got another card from Madeira, but it was not send. It was a present from a colleague of my mother. It shows the Botannical Garden of Funchal.
