Lithuania: Crowd-Funded Drone Bayraktar for Ukraine

The first Bayraktar fundraising for the Armed Forces of Ukraine took place in Lithuania. It was announced by Lithuanian TV presenter Andrius Tapinas. This initiative received approval from the defense departments of Lithuania and Turkey. Lithuanians collected more than 5 million euros for this purchase in three days. On June 2, 2022, Baykar, the manufacturer of attack drones, announced that it will donate Bayraktar TB2 to the Lithuanian campaign. Lithuanian Defense Minister Arvydas Anušauskas emphasized that Lithuania will use the collected money to buy the necessary ammunition for the attack drone.

On June 9, the Lithuanian Post Office started selling a stamp with the image of Bayraktar TB2. Half of the money for the purchase of the stamp goes to the accounts of the charity fund "Blue/Yellow" (Lithuanian: Mėlyna ir geltona) for humanitarian aid to Ukraine.

Lithuania: The 100th Anniversary of Vytautas Magnus University

Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) (Lithuanian: "Vytauto Didžiojo Universitetas (VDU)") is a public university in Kaunas, Lithuania. The university was founded in 1922 during the interwar period as an alternate national university. Initially it was known as the University of Lithuania, but in 1930 the university was renamed to Vytautas Magnus University, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the death of the Lithuanian ruler Vytautas the Great, who is known for the nation's greatest historical expansion in the 15th century. It is one of the leading universities of Lithuania, and has about 8,800 students, including Master's students and Ph.D. candidates. There are a little over 1000 employees, including approximately 90 professors.

Lithuania: EUROPA - "Castles"

Lithuanian Post issued two stamps for the 2017 EUROPA theme "Castles". The stamps on this cover below are showing ancient documents of the castles of Biržai (left stamp) and Klaipėda (right stamp). Biržai Castle is a castle in the city of Biržai, located in the northern part of Lithuania. The city and the whole region is renowned for its many traditional-recipe beer breweries. Klaipėda Castle, also known as Memelburg or Memel Castle, is an archeological site and museum housed in a castle built by the Teutonic Knights in Klaipėda, Lithuania, near the Baltic Sea. It was first mentioned in 1252.

On the left bottom, you can also see a cachet postmark from the International Stamp Fair in Sindelfingen 2017.

Lithuania: Klaipėda

Klaipėda, historically also known as Memel, is a city in Lithuania on the Baltic Sea coast. It is the third largest city in Lithuania and the capital of Klaipėda County. The city has a complex recorded history, partially due to the combined regional importance of the usually ice-free Port of Klaipėda at the mouth of the Akmena-Danė River. The population shrank from 207,100 in 1992 to 157,350 in 2014. Besides others, the city is twinned with Mannheim, Germany.
