To mark the centenary of the Latvian state, Latvijas Pasts issues a special stamp Flag – Map of Latvia. This is the first stamp of irregular shape released in Latvia, and it is designed as an outline of the map of Latvia. After centuries of Swedish, Polish and Russian rule, a rule mainly executed by the Baltic German aristocracy, the Republic of Latvia was established on 18 November 1918 when it broke away and declared independence from Russia in the aftermath of World War I.
